At Charbr, we take immense pride in introducing you to our canine family. Each member of our breeding program is selected for their health, temperament, and reflection of the breed standard. Our dogs are not just pedigrees, they are cherished family members, residing in a loving and supportive home environment. Over many years Cindy has enjoyed coaching dog obedience classes with highly regarded dog training schools and training /titling our dogs in various events. Notably, together with our dog Nemeau, through hard work and dedication, claimed several titles in multiple dog sporting events in his lifetime. Nemeau was recognized as the #1 Canadian Kennel Club Obedience Competition Portuguese Water Dog for the years 2006, 2009 & 2011. He was also presented with the Gold Register of Merit by the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America in recognition of his numerous title achievements.
Portuguese water dogs were bred to work aboard fishing vessels as couriers carrying messages including weather reports between boats and to shore and back from the Algarve fishing villages along the coast of Portugal. They herded fish for catch into nets, retrieved articles fallen overboard and rescued fishermen from drowning. They were revered stewards whose wages were paid with offering part of the catch of the day for meals. These great companions and loyal shipmates also guarded the boats and gear while the fishermen were away. In the 1940's PWDs almost became extinct after radios took over their work on boats leaving only about 40 said to be alive in the world. Thankfully the breed survived and in 1968 was imported to the USA where the revered breed flourished through dedicated breeding/health recording. The Portuguese water dog breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in January 1984 and became eligible to compete in the show ring as a member of the Working Group. Eight years later, in April 1992, their registration was also accepted into The Canadian Kennel Club.
